Kali | New Delhi: Indian painter Tayyib Mehta's 1989 famous painting 'Kali' fetched a record Rs 26.4 crore in an auction. This is the highest price any painting of Mehta has received so far. It has been sold at SaffronArt's recent 'Milestone 200th Auction'. This painting has become the fifth most expensive painting in India.


This painting of Mehta was initially valued at Rs 19.8 crore. However, it broke the record of Mehta's 1994 painting. The work, depicting a woman sitting on a rickshaw, received Rs 22.99 crore at Christie's auction held in 2017. SaffronArt CEO and co-founder Dinesh Wazirani said, "The sale of Tayyab Mehta's Kali is a significant milestone in the sale of modern Indian art."

85 percent of the auctions have been sold and a total of Rs 75 crore has been received from the sale. It also holds the record for five other painters NS Bendre, MV Dhurandhar, Shankho Choudhary, Sheela Makhijani and Dhananjay Singh. In the past, many paintings of painters of India have been sold for crores of rupees.

Painting by Indian painter Vasudev A Gaitonde was sold for Rs 29.3 crore. This painting was one of the most expensive paintings sold after 1965. Similarly, FN Souza's painting titled Berth was sold for Rs 26.9 crore. Tayeb Mehta's painting titled Mahishasur which was made in 1994 also fetched Rs 19.78 crore at auction. Akbar Padamsee's painting Greek Landscape received Rs 19.19 crore at auction. It was one of the most expensive paintings in India
